Boarding Policies

What We Ask of Every Guest

Transparency builds trust. Here’s everything you need to know before your cat’s stay.

Vaccination & Health Policy

The health and safety of our feline guests is my primary concern. I maintain a moderate vaccination policy designed to protect all residents from highly contagious diseases while respecting individual medical histories and the low-contact nature of my bed and breakfast. My protocol comes at the advice of current experts in feline health. It is not meant to be a hassle, but truly to ensure that all cats return home happy and healthy.

1. Required Vaccinations

To ensure a safe environment for everyone, we require proof of the following core vaccinations for all boarding guests:

  • FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia)
  • Rabies
Note on FeLV (Feline Leukemia): While Feline Leukemia is a critical vaccine for outdoor cats, I do not strictly require it for boarding. Catnip B&B is a strictly low-contact environment where guests do not share physical space, and the virus typically requires close, direct contact for transmission.

2. Timing & Efficacy

All vaccinations must be administered at least 7 days prior to the scheduled stay. This window allows:

  • The cat’s immune system to build proper protection
  • Observation for any rare adverse reactions in the comfort of their own home before traveling

3. Safety & Hygiene Protocols

I mitigate the risk of illness through rigorous facility standards:

  • No Direct Contact: Cats from different households never come into direct physical contact with one another
  • Facility Cleaning: Medical-grade disinfection protocols for all suites and common surfaces between every guest stay
  • Ongoing Cleaning: Medical-grade disinfection protocols for all food and water bowls, bedding, and cat toys

4. Exceptions & Alternative Protocols

I recognize that some cats may have medical conditions that preclude standard vaccination schedules. I offer limited exceptions on a case-by-case basis:

  • Titer Testing: We accept recent (within 12 months) positive antibody titer results from a licensed veterinarian as proof of immunity for FVRCP in lieu of a booster
  • Veterinary Waivers: If your cat has a documented medical reason for not being vaccinated (e.g., age, chronic illness, or previous severe reaction), I will review a signed letter of support from your veterinarian

5. Documentation

Please provide a digital copy of your cat’s vaccination records or titer results at least 7 days prior to check-in. This allows me to verify all requirements and ensure a smooth start to your cat’s vacation.

Special Care for Diabetic Guests

The health and safety of every cat in my care is my primary concern. I recognize that boarding a diabetic cat requires a specialized level of attention and management. All requests for diabetic feline guests are subject to a comprehensive, case-by-case review.

Evaluation Process

My evaluation considers several critical factors to ensure I can maintain your cat’s health and comfort throughout their stay:

  • Medical Stability: We assess the stability of your cat’s diabetic condition, including their current insulin dosage regimen and blood glucose management
  • Prior Boarding Experience: Information regarding previous boarding experiences, particularly with their diabetic care, helps me understand their adaptability and specific needs
  • Veterinary Communication: I may require direct communication with your veterinarian to fully understand your cat’s medical history and current treatment plan
While I strive to accommodate all guests, I reserve the right to decline a boarding request if I determine that I cannot safely and effectively meet your cat’s specific medical requirements. This decision is always made with your cat’s best interest at heart.

Parasite Prevention Policy

At Catnip Bed & Breakfast, I am committed to maintaining a clean, comfortable, and healthy environment for all my feline guests. This policy is designed to prevent the introduction and spread of pests and diseases. I’ve intentionally developed this protocol in consultation with current best practices from feline health experts.

1. Parasite-Free Requirement

All cats must be free from external and internal parasites upon arrival. I strongly recommend that all guests be on a year-round, veterinarian-approved parasite prevention program, as they will have the opportunity to visit the outdoor catio when the weather permits.

2. Flea Detection & Management

I perform a flea check on every guest during the check-in process. My response to flea detection is proactive and designed to prioritize the comfort of the affected cat while safeguarding other guests.

3. Internal Parasites (Worms)

The health of your cat’s digestive system is equally important. If a guest is found to have symptoms or evidence of internal parasites during their stay:

  • Veterinary Consultation: I will immediately contact you and your designated veterinarian
  • Medical Treatment: If you or your veterinarian cannot be reached in a timely manner, I will seek professional medical care at a local veterinary clinic
  • Owner Responsibility: All veterinary fees, transportation costs, and medication expenses will be at the owner’s expense

4. General Health Expectations

Guests should be in good general health and not showing signs of undiagnosed illness (such as coughing, sneezing, or lethargy) upon check-in. If your cat has a chronic condition, please refer to the Diabetic and Special Needs section above for details on how I manage their care.
